Colchester is evolving into a vibrant destination where people choose to visit, shop and spend time. Our investment strategy focuses on a sustainable, lively city centre that attracts businesses, visitors and investment while enhancing quality of life.
The updated City Centre Masterplan was shaped by feedback from over 2,000 residents.
Key projects
- Over £40 million investment across 15 projects, attracting private investment and revitalising the city centre.
- St Nicholas Square: opened in 2025, creating a hub for businesses and visitors, with monthly Sunday markets launching in March alongside other events.
- St Botolph’s Quarter and Circus: work begins on a £20 million scheme including new public realm, improved station access, a heritage trail, roundabout upgrades and integrating St Botolph’s Priory into Colchester’s tourism offer.
Outside the city centre
- Northern Gateway: growth area bringing together sport facilities, Colchester Leisure Park (restaurants and entertainment), a forthcoming Vue cinema and plans for new affordable homes.
- Greenstead: investment supported by the £20 million Pride in Place programme, improving public spaces, community facilities and affordable homes.
- Wider city investment continues through UK Shared Prosperity Fund and Rural England Prosperity Fund allocations (2025–26), supporting business growth, skills, employability and capital projects.
