As the consultation on Colchester’s proposed New Local Plan continues, the proposals reveal policies that set higher energy and sustainability standards.

The proposed Local Plan aims to deliver homes that go beyond current building regulations, helping Colchester meet national climate targets. Evidence from across Essex shows that achieving net zero carbon homes is both technically feasible and financially viable, making this ambition realistic and cost-effective.

The plan sets out tougher standards for all new developments, ensuring they contribute to cutting emissions, tackling climate change and reducing fuel bills for residents.

It also promotes sustainable travel and improved connectivity, alongside expanding wildlife sites and green spaces – protecting biodiversity and enhancing the natural environment for future generations.

Cllr David King, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “The proposed Local Plan acknowledges that additional housing will bring many pressures which we must mitigate where we can, as well as opportunities to set higher standards that are helpful for the environment and in reducing fuel bills.”

Residents have until 14 January to share their views and help shape this vision. Full details and consultation documents are available on the council’s website: www.colchester.gov.uk/NewLocalPlan
