Children can now enjoy Colchester’s brand-new Castle Park playground, just in time for the Easter bank holiday weekend.

Following a public vote last year, the much-anticipated new playground is officially open and ready for families to explore. Designed with you and your children in mind, it brings together imaginative play, local heritage and accessibility in the heart of Castle Park.

Inspired by Colchester’s story

The new playground reflects Colchester’s past and surroundings, with different areas offering a range of ways to play. Children can climb and explore a Roman-themed castle and discover features inspired by the local landscape.

For many families, the helter-skelter is a much-loved part of Castle Park, and it has been carefully refurbished and repainted so it can continue to be enjoyed.

A playground for every child

The playground has been designed so children of all abilities can play together. Step-free access, inclusive equipment and sensory features are part of the design throughout, helping to create a space where everyone can join in and feel welcome.

Shaped by the community

The playground has been shaped by the community from the start. Local residents chose the winning design, which was further shaped by ideas shared by children and families. The result is a space that reflects what people told us they wanted: somewhere fun, imaginative and welcoming for all.

With the Easter holidays underway, families can visit, explore the new playground and enjoy time together. Whether you are visiting for the first time or returning to a much-loved spot, Castle Park’s new playground is ready to welcome you.

Councillor Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “This playground is a fantastic example of what we can achieve when we listen to our communities. Residents helped choose the design, children shared their ideas, and the result is a space that is welcoming, imaginative and accessible. Castle Park is a special place for many families, and it’s great to see a new playground that children of all abilities can enjoy together.”
