Colchester City Council and InColchester Business Improvement District (BID) have issued a joint statement following confirmation that Barclays will relocate its Colchester branch from the High Street to Culver Square.
While the move represents a change in location from the historic High Street, both organisations have welcomed Barclays’ commitment to maintaining a strong presence within the city centre.
The relocation to Culver Square reflects wider changes in the way customers access banking services, alongside continued investment in central, accessible retail destinations.
Colchester City Council has acknowledged disappointment at the loss of a major banking presence on the High Street but emphasised its proactive approach to supporting the future of the area.
Councillor David King, Deputy Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “We are naturally disappointed to see Barclays move from the High Street, where it has long been part of Colchester’s historic core. However, we welcome their decision to remain in the city centre and continue serving residents and businesses locally.
“Our focus now is on the future. We will actively work with property owners and partners to support the reoccupation of vacant units and ensure the High Street continues to evolve as a vibrant and attractive destination. This is part of our wider commitment to strengthening the city centre offer and supporting economic growth.”
Colchester BID has highlighted the continued resilience of the city centre, with vacancy rates remaining comparatively low.
Vinnie Geaves, Manager at InColchester Business Improvement District (BID), said: “Barclays’ move to Culver Square demonstrates continued confidence in Colchester city centre as a strong retail and service destination. Footfall patterns are changing, and businesses are adapting to ensure they are located where customers are most active.
“We remain positive about the overall health of the city centre. Vacancy levels in Colchester are low compared to many towns and cities of a similar size, which reflects the strength and diversity of our offer.
“We will continue to work closely with partners, including the council, to support businesses, attract new occupiers, and ensure Colchester continues to thrive.”
Both the council and BID reaffirmed their shared commitment to supporting businesses, encouraging investment, and ensuring Colchester’s city centre continues to adapt and grow.
