Four years to the day since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, the Colchester community gathered not just to mark a date, but to hold a light for those still living through the darkness of war.
On 24 February 2026 at Colchester Town Hall, local leaders, residents, and members of the Ukrainian community gathered and stood side-by-side. The ceremony was anchored by powerful testimonies that spoke to the human heart of the crisis.
Maria Kurinna, Ukrainian human rights defender provided a deeply personal perspective on the invasion’s toll, urging the world not to look away and highlighting the desperate, ongoing need for global support. In one of the morning’s most touching moments, a young Ukrainian artist Roksi Kolodii shared her personal journey and expressed gratitude to the British community’s friendliness and caring nature, thanks for their support, and introduced her installation artwork "Because of You" which symbolizes the Ukrainian spirit and their fight for independence.
Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Michael Lilley said: “We gather to celebrate the resilience and spirit of the Ukrainian families who have found sanctuary here in Colchester. In these difficult times, we are reminded that compassion and unity are what bind us as a community. Together, we will weave your stories into the rich tapestry of our community and build a future filled with promise, understanding, and love. To our Ukrainian friends: your bravery inspires us, your hopes matter to us, and together, we will rise."
The ceremony ended on a high note as everyone joined together to sing. The crowd first sang an upbeat song by a Ukrainian rock band, followed by a moving version of the Ukrainian National Anthem, bringing the room together in a powerful show of support.
