Parents, carers and grandparents - if you’re already wondering how to keep the kids happily entertained this February Half Term, Colchester Museums have plenty lined up to make your week memorable. From 14-22 February, all three museums will be buzzing with family‑friendly activities, creative sessions and hands‑on history.

This half term also marks the final opportunity to experience the hugely popular Mythical Creatures exhibition at Colchester Castle, which closes on 22 February. Families can delve into a world of dragons, unicorns, griffins and other legendary beings, brought vividly to life through extraordinary objects and interactive elements that inspire curiosity and imagination.

At Colchester Castle, visitors can also join engaging family tours and get hands‑on with the Castle’s historic Armoury. Hollytrees Museum will be offering creative craft sessions inspired by toys and stories of the past - perfect for little makers who love getting stuck in. Over at the Natural History Museum, families can enjoy a wildlife worksheet designed to encourage children to explore the natural world in a fun and accessible way. With all activities held indoors, it’s an ideal way to enjoy a day out whatever the weather might bring.

To help families discover even more of Colchester’s rich heritage, a free Family Heritage Treasure Trail and a Roman Trivia Trail are available to pick up from the Visitor Information Centre at Hollytrees Museum. The Family Heritage Treasure Trail leads explorers to ten fascinating landmarks across the city – from Colchester Castle and the Roman Theatre to Jumbo, Balkerne Gate and St Botolph’s Priory – encouraging children to learn while they adventure. Meanwhile, the Roman Trivia Trail invites families to uncover surprising facts about Roman Colchester, with information panels along the route and a small prize for children who complete the challenge.

Half Term is also a great time to get a Colchester Museum Pass which provides unlimited entry to Colchester Castle, Hollytrees Museum and the Natural History Museum for a whole year - perfect for the school holidays.

Councillor Lee Scordis, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Environment, said: “School holidays are the perfect chance for families to explore together, and for February half term, our museums have created a fantastic mix of fun, learning and adventure for children of all ages. With the final chance to see Mythical Creatures and plenty of activities across all three museums, it’s a great time to plan a visit and make some special memories.”
