Colchester Museums is inviting visitors to explore the fascinating history and practice of witchcraft with a brand-new Discover Witchcraft: Magical Protection Workshop, taking place at Hollytrees Museum on Saturday 20 June 2026, from 10am to 1pm.
This immersive, hands-on experience marks the first in a new series of four monthly workshops, each offering a different focus and a fresh way to engage with themes of folklore, belief, and material culture.
Create, learn and take something home
Rooted in the stories and objects featured in the current “Discover: Museum Wonders” exhibition – such as protective items including witches’ bottles – the workshop will bring these traditions to life through guided activities and discussion. Participants will explore historical and practical approaches to spiritual protection, including the use of salt, herbs, protective charms, and candle magic.
Led in a welcoming and supportive environment, the session will include demonstrations, shared learning, and the opportunity to create a personalised protection charm or spell to take home. Whether new to the subject or with existing knowledge, attendees will gain insight into time-honoured practices designed to promote grounding, protection, and empowerment.
Who can attend and what’s included
The workshop is open to those aged 16 and over, with all materials provided and refreshments available during the session. Due to the interactive nature of the event, spaces are limited, and early booking is recommended.
Tickets and how to book
Tickets are priced at £25 per person and can be bought online at colchester.cimuseums.org.uk/events.
Councillor Lee Scordis, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Environment, said: “This new series of workshops is an exciting way for visitors to connect more deeply with the themes in our ‘Discover: Museum Wonders’ exhibition. The Magical Protection workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore the traditions behind objects in our collection – like witches’ bottles – while also engaging in creative, hands-on learning. We’re looking forward to welcoming people to Hollytrees for a memorable and thought-provoking experience.”
The June workshop is the first of four events taking place over the coming months, each exploring a different aspect of witchcraft and folklore, encouraging visitors to return and discover something new each time.
