We’re proud to share that Colchester City Council has been awarded Bronze in the Housing category at the 2026 Local Government Chronicle (LGC) Award, recognising our work to support residents with high-quality temporary accommodation.

This achievement reflects something at the heart of what we do. Supporting local families through some of the most challenging moments in their lives, while making sure we use taxpayers’ money wisely and protect essential services.

Creating better temporary homes

Our award-winning project focuses on transforming former student accommodation into high quality, fully equipped temporary homes.

Working with Colchester Borough Homes, and UK student accommodation specialists Beyond the Box, we’ve been able to offer families a genuine place to live – not just somewhere to stay. These homes provide greater stability, dignity and access to local services, making a real difference to people when they need it most.

At the same time, this approach is helping us deliver more for less. By improving the quality of temporary accommodation and reducing reliance on more expensive options, we are easing pressure on council finances while improving support for residents.

A proud moment in a competitive year

The LGC Awards are among the most respected in local government, and this year saw over 1,000 entries, the highest number ever.

We were also honoured to be shortlisted in two additional categories:

  • Campaign of the Year for Beyond the Uniform, a campaign on behalf of the North Essex Parking Partnership, tackling abuse towards Civil Enforcement Officers, and
  • Economic Support for the work of Amphora Group in driving economic growth through events

While we did not take home awards in those categories, being shortlisted nationally is a strong endorsement of the work happening throughout our council and the positive difference it is making across our communities.

A team effort for our community

Cllr Rhys Smithson, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “Winning bronze in this award is a real testament to the dedication of our teams and partners. We are committed to supporting residents with compassion and respect, and this recognition shows the impact that approach can have.

“This work is about people first, making sure families have the stability and dignity they deserve during difficult times. At the same time, it shows how we can deliver better services while reducing costs, which is vital as we continue to protect services for our residents.”

Cllr Paul Dundas, Leader of the Council, said: “This recognition on a national stage is something everyone involved should feel proud of. It highlights the positive difference we are making for our residents and the strength of partnership working across Colchester.

“What makes this achievement stand out is that we are improving people’s lives while also being financially responsible. Reducing pressure on our budget means we can focus resources on the services that matter most and continue delivering for our communities.

“To win an award in such a competitive field, and to be shortlisted across multiple categories, shows our commitment to getting things done and delivering real results for local people.”

Looking ahead

This recognition motivates us to keep going, continuing to find practical, innovative ways to support our residents and strengthen our communities.

We will keep focusing on delivering the homes people need, improving services and making sure every pound of public money is used to make a visible difference across Colchester.
