The flag of St George will be flown from Colchester Town Hall this weekend as the city shows its support for England in the World Cup.
The flag will take pride of place on one of the city's most recognisable landmarks, flying alongside the Union flag, joining residents, community groups and businesses across Colchester who are getting behind the national team.
Football has a unique ability to bring people together, and we know many residents will be following the action with family, friends and colleagues over the weekend.
Bringing people together
We are proud to stand alongside our communities in supporting England and celebrating the sense of togetherness that major sporting events can create.
Across the city, local pubs, cafés, restaurants and other businesses are also showing their support, decorating their premises, hosting screenings and creating opportunities for people to come together and enjoy the occasion.
The weekend is expected to provide a welcome boost for many local businesses as residents head into the city centre and neighbourhood venues to watch the match and celebrate together.
The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Andrew Ellis, said: "England's progress in the World Cup has captured the imagination of the country, and we are delighted to show our support by flying the St George's flag from the Town Hall this weekend.
“Major sporting events like this create a real sense of excitement and community spirit. They bring people together, support local businesses and give us all something to celebrate.
"We know many residents will be cheering England on from homes, pubs, clubs and venues across the city, and we wish the team every success. Come on England!"
Weekend celebrations
We encourage everyone enjoying the match this weekend to celebrate responsibly, support local businesses where they can, and make the most of what promises to be a memorable occasion for the city and the country.
