Riders from Colchester, Basildon, Clacton and Harwich took to the streets of their local communities on 22 October as part of the Cycling UK Glow Ride, joining cyclists across the UK in a colourful celebration of cycling and a call for safer streets.
The event formed part of Cycling UK's national Glow Ride campaign, which highlights the importance of creating safer cycling routes and encouraging more people, particularly women, to feel confident cycling after dark.
Across the four areas, Essex Pedal Power (EPP) riders of all ages took part in the local rides, creating bright spectacles as they journeyed through their communities. The rides brought together people of all ages and abilities, demonstrating how cycling can connect communities while promoting healthier and more sustainable travel. More than 40 EPP riders took part in the event.
Kelvin Davies, Essex Pedal Power Place Sustainability Lead, cycled a cargo bike carrying a speaker to provide upbeat music. Kelvin said: "We had all ages come out for our Glow Rides, which was just brilliant to see, from children on tows to an 82-year-old regular EPP cyclist. It was definitely a great way to showcase cyclists and cycle safety as part of the Cycling UK awareness event.”
Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection said: "It was fantastic to see riders across Essex come together in their local communities for such a positive event. The Glow Ride was a great opportunity to celebrate cycling, enjoy an evening ride with friends and family, and support the call for safer streets for everyone.
"Congratulations to everyone who took part and helped make the evening such a memorable event, both in Essex and at Glow Rides taking place across the UK."
