Marking Refugee Week with community football match

Held to mark Refugee Week, the 'Move Together' match brought a World Cup carnival atmosphere to Colchester

The vibrant, high-energy spirit of football took centre stage on 13 June at the Shrub End Community Centre, as Colchester City Council (CCC) faced off against the Refugee, Refugee, Asylum & Migrant Action (RAMA) football team.

Held to mark Refugee Week, the 'Move Together' match brought a World Cup carnival atmosphere to Colchester. Fans and families filled the sidelines, voicing their support and cheering on the players in a welcoming display of community unity.

More than just a game

The Council team played the match hoping to make up for losing by a very narrow margin last summer. It was an exciting, close game with plenty of action from both sides, but the CCC team worked hard to win 3–2. More than just a football match, the afternoon was a great way to celebrate different cultures and bring the community together.

Maria Wilby, Operational Lead of RAMA said: "The football match between RAMA clients and the Council team was filled with warmth and community spirit, a true reflection of the welcome found in our City of Sanctuary. "

Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection said: "Refugee Week is an opportunity to acknowledge those fleeing terrible times across the world. How, through sport, arts and shared times, we can reduce differences and build understanding between different communities. And can ensure that Colchester remains a place where everyone, no matter their background, feels safe, valued, and at home."
