The Mayor of Colchester, Cllr Andrew Ellis is inviting residents to join him for a special flag-raising ceremony at the Town Hall to mark Merchant Navy Day on Thursday 3 September.
The ceremony will begin at 10am and will feature the raising of the Merchant Navy flag, the Red Ensign, in honour of the men and women who have served, and continue to serve, in the Merchant Navy. The annual event recognises the vital role merchant seafarers play in supporting the UK's trade, economy and security.
The Mayor will lead the ceremony and address those gathered, reflecting on the contribution of Merchant Navy personnel past and present.
The Mayor said: “Merchant Navy Day is an important opportunity to recognise the dedication and professionalism of the men and women who keep goods, food and essential supplies moving around the world.
“As an island nation, we rely heavily on the maritime industry, often without realising it. This ceremony allows us to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by generations of merchant seafarers, particularly in times of conflict, while also recognising the valuable work they continue to do today.
“I am pleased to invite residents to join us at the Town Hall as we pay tribute to their service and contribution.”
Residents are warmly encouraged to attend the ceremony and show their support for the Merchant Navy.
