The wait is over. Visitors can now visit the Moon themselves, as internationally acclaimed artist Luke Jerram’s Museum of the Moon officially opens at Colchester Castle today.
Running until 31 October 2026, the breathtaking installation transforms the Castle into an immersive lunar experience, giving visitors the chance to stand beneath a stunning six-metre replica of the Moon, created using detailed NASA imagery and accompanied by a mesmerising surround-sound composition.
Following the huge popularity of Jerram’s previous Castle installations, Gaia and Mars, the latest celestial artwork is set to captivate thousands of visitors throughout the summer and autumn.
Suspended within one of the city’s most iconic heritage attractions, Museum of the Moon offers a unique opportunity to experience the wonder of space while exploring more than 2,000 years of Colchester’s history.

Visitors can spend time beneath the illuminated lunar sculpture, discover fascinating details of the Moon's surface, and enjoy the atmospheric soundscape that fills the Castle's historic surroundings.
Admission includes entry to the Castle Museum, allowing visitors to explore nationally important collections and discover the rich story of Britain's First City alongside this internationally acclaimed artwork.

For this special installation, there is a small additional charge on top of standard Castle admission. This helps support exhibition costs, loans and conservation work. When booking online, this is added as a small fee (£1 per person or £3 for saver tickets). For tickets bought in person, a £1 charge is added per ticket.
