Reaching this point has involved careful consideration of the options for the boating lake and the practical, financial and operational issues involved, alongside significant work to protect and restore some of the city’s other important heritage assets, including the Town Hall and Colchester Castle.
The next stage will include detailed condition surveys to confirm the work required and final costs. The council is also preparing to go out to tender for a contractor so that work can begin as quickly as possible once the necessary surveys, approvals and procurement processes have been completed. The aim remains to restore the lake and bring it back into use by spring 2027, subject to survey findings, procurement, costs and the necessary approvals.
Cllr Paul Dundas, Leader of Colchester City Council, said: “We know people have been waiting for clarity about the future of the boating lake. There has been a lot to consider, but we have now reached the point where we can be clear about our ambition to restore it and bring it back into use.
“There is still important work to complete, including surveys, procurement and confirming the costs, but we are now ready to begin the process of appointing a contractor, with a clear ambition to get restoration work under way urgently and bring the boating lake back into use by spring 2027. From here, we’ll keep residents informed every step of the way.”
Cllr Martin Goss, Portfolio Holder for Waste, Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “The boating lake has been part of Castle Park for generations and we know how much it means to residents and visitors.
“Having listened to the public we are unanimous in our commitment to getting this repaired and open for Spring 2027, so the residents of Colchester can once again enjoy the pleasant and tranquil relaxing environment."
The lake dates from the 1800s and has long been an established feature of the Grade II listed Castle Park.
We will update residents as the project progresses, including when contracts are agreed, work begins and we have a confirmed reopening date.
