Residents across Essex are being invited to explore the future of sustainable travel at a new hands-on electric vehicle event coming to Colchester this summer.
Essex is hosting its first Electrifying Essex event on Saturday 18 July at Colchester Park & Ride, giving people the chance to compare, test drive and explore the latest electric vehicle technology, all in one place. The free event, running from 10am to 3pm aims to help residents make informed choices about cleaner, more sustainable travel.
Visitors will be able to get behind the wheel of the latest electric cars, compare different models side by side and speak directly to dealers, experts and local EV owners to get clear, practical advice about their options.
What to expect on the day
As well as test driving vehicles, attendees will be able to speak to local EV owners about their experiences, including charging and running costs, ask questions of experts and dealers, try out e-bikes and e-cargo bikes on a dedicated test track and learn more about car clubs and other travel options.
The event will feature more than 30 vehicles, including 18 available for test drives, showcasing a wide range of manufacturers such as BMW, Mini, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Toyota, Kia, Renault, Alpine, Honda, Ford, Chery, BYD and Geely.
Some test drive activities will be subject to age restrictions. Residents are encouraged to register in advance to secure a place via Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/electrifying-essex-event-tickets-1981432108776
Helping residents make informed choices
With more people choosing electric vehicles and fuel costs continuing to rise, the event also highlights how switching to electric could offer a more cost-effective way to travel, including lower running costs and reduced maintenance.
Transport is one of the biggest contributors to carbon emissions, and electric vehicles can play an important role in improving air quality and supporting a cleaner, healthier environment.
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly accessible, supported by the rollout of more public charging points across Essex. While switching to electric will not be the right choice for everyone, the event offers a practical opportunity to explore the options, understand what might work for individual circumstances and make informed decisions.
Cllr Andrea Luxford Vaughan, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Sustainable Development, said: “This event is a rare opportunity to see, compare and test drive a wide range of electric cars in one place. With more than 30 EVs available on the day, residents will be able to get a real feel for what might work for them.”
The event is free to attend, with visitors able to arrive at any time during the day and stay as long as they wish. Parking at the Park & Ride site costs £3, with alternative options including regular bus services from the city centre and Colchester railway station.
