Have you ever wondered how Colchester chooses its Mayor each year? On Wednesday 27 May 2026, you’ll have the chance to see this historic moment unfold, as the city’s annual Mayor Making ceremony returns to the beautifully restored Moot Hall for the first time since 2022.
After three years at the Old Library during major renovation works, the ceremony is coming home – and you can watch it live from wherever you are via the council’s YouTube channel.
A new Mayor for Colchester
At the heart of the ceremony, which begins at 10.30am, is a moment of change and continuity for the city. Councillor Andrew Ellis will be sworn in as Colchester’s new Mayor, taking on a role that represents the city’s pride, history and community spirit.
Joining him will be his Mayoress, Mrs Nicky Ellis, while Councillor Paul Smith will take on the role of Deputy Mayor, supported by the Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Sarah Smith.
Before this, we will pause to recognise the contribution of outgoing Mayor, Councillor Michael Lilley, and thank him for his service over the past year.
A tradition you can witness
If you’ve never seen Mayor Making before, it is one of Colchester’s most historic civic events. Robed councillors process together before formally electing the new Mayor, who then takes the oath of office and receives the chains and robe that symbolise the role.
It’s a visual reminder of the city’s long history – but also a moment firmly rooted in today’s community, as each new Mayor takes on a year of meeting residents, supporting charities and representing Colchester at key events.
Reflecting on the year ahead, Councillor Andrew Ellis said: “I am truly honoured to be chosen to serve as Mayor of Colchester. Ours is a city with over two millennia of history, but what makes Colchester truly special is its people – the volunteers, organisations, businesses, and community groups who work so hard to support others and bring our communities to life.
“During my mayoral year, I hope to celebrate that spirit of community, kindness, and wellbeing, and to shine a light on the people who make Colchester such a wonderful place to live.”
How to watch and find out more
