Colchester residents enjoyed a unique behind-the-scenes look at the bi-annual Crematorium Open Day held in May. The event provided a rare opportunity for the community to explore the facility in a relaxed atmosphere, showcasing the high level of professionalism and care provided by the Bereavement Services team.
Strong turnout for guided tours and heritage walks
The perfect spring weather encouraged a fantastic turnout, with over 100 people taking part in the guided tours of the crematorium throughout the day. These tours allowed guests to see all areas of the facility and learn more about the technical processes involved. In addition to the crematorium tours, more than 40 visitors joined the Heritage Walk led by Sharon Mooney. This walk proved a hit with all ages, from young families to history buffs, as Sharon shared the touching and deeply personal stories hidden behind the monuments. Hearing about the lives of those remembered here turned the stone memorials into living history, captivating the crowd.
Expert advice and local business support
The day was supported by a diverse range of exhibitors who set up booths to offer guidance on bereavement and memorial services. These local and national businesses provided a friendly space for residents to ask practical questions about everything from legal advice to unique ways of remembering a loved one. We were also joined by Emily from Hoopers Genealogists, who kindly sponsored the refreshments. Having these experts on hand ensured that visitors could access all the information they needed in one welcoming location, making the complex world of funeral services feel much more approachable.
Breaking the silence on an important subject
Events like these play a vital role in opening up conversations about death, which can often remain a difficult or taboo subject for many people. By providing transparency and reassurance about the cremation process and the dignified way in which remains are handled, the Open Day helped to dispel common myths and provide peace of mind to those who attended.
Glowing feedback from the community
The team found it incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact of this openness, as many visitors expressed how much they valued the chance to ask questions and see the care that goes into every aspect of the service.
The visitors' book was filled with overwhelming praise, with guests describing the day as insightful, informative, and deeply reassuring.

The Blanketeers were another standout highlight, knitting throughout the day while keeping guests refreshed with tea and coffee. Thanks to their hard work, they raised £63 for their cause.
Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of Colchester City Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection, said: “We were delighted by the wonderful feedback from the event, which perfectly showcased our beautiful, well-maintained Colchester site as a supportive space for open conversations about an important part of life.
