A new chapter for accessible cycling in Colchester began with the official opening of the Wheels for All mini cycling hub at Old Heath Recreation Ground.
Representatives from Wheels for All Colchester, delivery partner Essex Pedal Power Colchester, residents and project supporters Evers and Tiptree Building Supplies (TBS) attended the opening ceremony on 4 August to celebrate the launch of the new hub.
The new hub offers accessible cycling sessions using a range of adapted trikes. The sessions are designed for people with disabilities, long-term health conditions, those recovering from injury, and anyone who faces barriers to traditional cycling. By bringing these sessions to Old Heath Recreation Ground, the hub will make inclusive cycling more accessible for residents in Old Heath and New Town.
A key part of the project was the sponsorship and practical support provided by Evers and TBS. Evers donated the plant, labour and materials needed to prepare the site and construct the concrete base for the new cycle shelter and storage building, creating a lasting community facility. TBS supported the project by supplying aggregates and plant hire, while Rightmix generously donated the concrete.
Jo Smith, Wheels for All Coordinator (Colchester), said: “We are thrilled to see this new hub open and ready to welcome local residents. Our aim is to make cycling accessible to everyone by providing a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment where people can build confidence, develop new skills and connect with others.
We are particularly grateful to Evers, Tiptree Building Supplies and Rightmix for their generosity and support in helping deliver this important community facility. Their contributions have enabled us to create an accessible and welcoming space where more people can enjoy the benefits and freedom of cycling.”
Cllr David King, Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Communities and Public Protection, said: “Everyone should have the chance to experience the joy and freedom of cycling. Accessible cycling helps people build confidence, improve their physical and mental wellbeing, and feel more connected to their community. This new hub is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when local organisations, businesses and community groups work together, and it will help more people across Colchester enjoy the many benefits that cycling can bring.”
