Residents will start to see scaffolding appear around parts of Colchester Town Hall from this week as a major programme of works gets underway to protect one of the city's most important historic buildings.
The project will repair sections of the Town Hall roof and replace ageing building systems to help preserve the Grade I listed building and ensure it can continue to serve residents, businesses and visitors for years to come.
Protecting a historic landmark
Specialist surveys found that parts of the Town Hall roof are showing signs of deterioration and need essential repairs to prevent more serious problems in the future.

The project has been developed by specialist conservation architects working with Historic England to ensure the building's historic character is protected throughout the works.
Around 60% of the roof area will receive new coverings, including replacement tiles and leadwork.
The project will also include the replacement of ageing cooling, heating and ventilation equipment that helps keep the building operating safely and efficiently. Some minor internal repairs and redecoration will also be carried out where areas have been affected by wear, damage or water ingress.
What will happen next?
The first stage of the project will be the installation of scaffolding around parts of the building. This work is expected to take place throughout the autumn.

Main roof repairs are expected to begin in January 2027 once the scaffolding is in place.
The overall programme is expected to last around 36 weeks and is scheduled for completion in June 2027. The scaffolding will remain in place for the duration of the works and will be removed towards the end of the project.
Residents may also notice occasional deliveries taking place via West Stockwell Street during the construction period.

Council services, ceremonies, weddings, civic events and meetings are expected to continue as normal wherever possible. The contractor will work closely with Town Hall staff to minimise disruption and make alternative arrangements where needed.
Councillor William Sunnucks, Portfolio Holder for Resources and Assets, said: "Colchester Town Hall is one of the city's most iconic and historically significant buildings, and it is important that we invest in its long-term future.
"These essential conservation works will help protect the building from further deterioration, preserve its historic character and ensure it continues to provide a safe and welcoming place for residents, businesses and visitors.”
