The vast majority of councils nationally, including Colchester City Council, have been significantly affected by the backlog.

The Regulations include a series of statutory deadlines aimed at progressively addressing the audit backlog over time, with “disclaimed” audit opinions required (if necessary) to be issued where insufficient time exists for external auditors to gather sufficient audit assurance in time to meet the deadlines.
