Four unitary proposals for what LGR could look like for Greater Essex were submitted to Government in September 2025. Information on the proposals can be found on the Greater Essex LGR Hub.
We have showed support for the 5 unitary council proposal. Under the 5-council model, Colchester would form a unitary with Braintree and Tendring, alongside Essex.
On 25 March 2026, the government confirmed its plans to progress the formation of a new unitary authority, bringing us together with Braintree and Tendring councils, as well as incorporating services currently delivered by Essex County Council. The new North East Essex Council is set to begin serving residents from April 2028.
During the process our focus remains on delivering essential services across the whole of the Colchester district.
