Our statistics explained

Find out how the gender pay gap data is calculated, including employee numbers, pay quartiles and bonus payments.

Hourly rate

The 2024 figures are based on 1,051 CCC employees (including casual workers) as at 31 March 2024 – 561 (53.3%) were men, 490 (46.6%) were women.

Pay quartiles

These split the total number of staff into 4 groups, from highest to lowest earners:

  • Of the 262 employees in the top quartile - 120 are male (45.8%), 142 are female (54.2%).
  • Of the 263 in the upper middle quartile - 129 are male (49.0%), 134 are female (51.0%).
  • Of the 263 in the lower middle quartile - 164 are male (62.4%), 99 are female (37.6%).
  • Of the 263 employees in the lower quartile - 148 are male (56.3%), 115 are female (43.7%).

Bonus pay

  • This is mainly a small performance payment to waste and recycling staff (in the lower pay quartiles) in return for ‘no annual leave, no sickness absence’ over Christmas and New Year.
  • Long service awards are defined as a bonus: CCC recognises the commitment of its employees to public service with £250 vouchers for employees achieving 25 years’ service.
