What is fly tipping?

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of any waste on land where you do not have permission to leave it. Even one black bin bag dumped in the wrong place counts as a fly-tipping offence.

Fly-tipping includes:

  • Household waste left on pavements, verges, alleyways or next to public bins
  • Furniture, mattresses, carpets or flooring abandoned outside
  • Electrical items such as fridges, TVs or microwaves left on public land
  • Builders’ rubble, tiles, plasterboard or renovation waste dumped in lay-bys or fields
  • Garden waste such as soil, branches or grass cuttings left in public areas
  • Clothes, shoes or donations left beside charity shops or full bring banks
  • Commercial waste dumped in residential areas
  • Any item placed outside for “FREE”, gifted or left for collection on public land

If waste is left anywhere other than an authorised site or collection service, it is legally classed as fly-tipping.
